Restoration of Indian Hill Cemetery’s 1867 Gothic chapel is underway. It opened in 1850 as part of the America Beautiful urban planning movement, which encouraged the use of rural environments and serene landscaping for public places.

“That’s why it’s landscaped the way it is so that people could have picnics and be in the cemetery,” Augie DeFrance said. “And this one is used: there are always people in here. There are people walking, during the heavy snows, we have snowboarders and cross-country skiiers, picnicking, sunbathing, classes from Wesleyan and schoolchildren.”
