A “new standard for college bookstores” was launched May 23, 2017, as more than 150 people were introduced to the 12,000-square-foot Wesleyan R.J. Julia Bookstore located in the old Itkins building on Main Street. Middletown native Shannon Allen, a Mercy High School graduate, Florida resident and wife of retired NBA all-star and Olympic gold medalist Ray Allen, spoke to the crowd stage amid whoops and cheers. The Allens own the cafe inside the bookstore, grown, a USDA organic-certified restaurant created in Miami, Florida.
